Birthday parties should be fun, not stressful. A good party doesn’t need to be expensive or even wildly exciting. Having some games and some foods the same every year makes good family traditions. Home-made cupcakes are standard birthday fare in our family – even when the birthday boy or girl has long left childhood behind.
Choose where you are having the party and which rooms and garden areas are off-limits – and mark that clearly. Close doors if you don’t want children to go through.
Inviting parents is usually a good idea. You can provide them a cup of tea and expect them to be responsible for their child’s behaviour. It helps if you let them know the house rules and what is expected, and where the bathroom, toilets and some mopping up cloths are.
